A digital asset is an onchain record under a particular standard and program. Its current owner, control rules, metadata and external media are separate parts. Owning the record does not automatically transfer copyright or make another application support it.

Begin with the record rather than the picture

A wallet can display an image, a title and a collectible number. Behind that display is an asset identified by an onchain address and managed under a particular program and standard.

The record can establish ownership and the rules for supported actions such as transfer or burn. Different Solana asset standards store those relationships differently. Do not infer the account layout solely from the image shown by a marketplace.

Choose a teaching artwork called Signal #17. Its illustration is one file. Its metadata describes it. Its asset record names the current owner and relevant authorities. Those components together explain what the wallet presents.

Two assets can point to the same image while having different addresses, owners and authenticity. Inspect the actual collection and creator evidence rather than treating visual similarity as identity.

Follow the path from account to metadata to file

Many assets store a URI which points to a JSON metadata document. That document can contain a description, image URI and references to animation, audio or other media.

For Signal #17, the asset can point to metadata JSON, which points to an image. Loading the asset successfully does not guarantee that the metadata host or image host is available.

Onchain attributes and offchain metadata can coexist under standards such as Metaplex Core. Read which field your application uses. A marketplace's cached image may differ from the current referenced file.

The metadata and storage guide works this reference chain and explains content addressing without promising permanent availability.

Inspect owner and other action-specific powers

The current owner is one role. Update authority, delegates, collection rules and configured plugins can supply other powers under the asset standard.

An authority able to update metadata may change the name or URI under the applicable rules. A transfer or freeze delegate can have another action-specific capability. Check actual state rather than assuming one wallet controls everything.

Metaplex Core, for example, has owner-managed, authority-managed and permanent plugin categories. Their management rules and lifecycle effects differ. A generic label such as NFT does not tell you which are present.

For an asset you plan to use or buy, identify who can perform the actions that matter to you and whether those powers can be changed or revoked.

Owning the record and using the work

Owning the record and using the work. Program rules: Current onchain owner, Transfer or delegate conditions, Update and lifecycle powers. Rights and service: Copying and commercial permission, Application recognition, Media and service availability.
Technical control and intellectual-property rights need their own evidence.

Usage rights come from the applicable terms

An asset's onchain transfer changes the record according to program rules. Rights to copy, modify, sell merchandise or use the artwork in another product depend on the relevant licence or rights assignment.

For Signal #17, a creator could permit personal display while retaining commercial rights. Another project could publish a broader licence. You need the actual terms and their connection to the asset.

WIPO distinguishes transferring ownership of intellectual property from granting permission through a licence. Use that distinction when reading a project's promise; a blockchain transfer alone is not a complete rights agreement.

Preserve the version and source of the terms relevant to the asset. Legal effect depends on the applicable agreement and jurisdiction, so do not infer a universal copyright outcome from the standard's name.

An application supplies recognition and utility

A game can recognize an asset as an eligible item, an event service can check a pass and a community can use ownership as one access condition. Each service must deliberately implement that behaviour.

Another game does not automatically obtain the model, animation, balancing rules or permission needed to use the same item. Shared ownership infrastructure can help recognition, but compatibility remains an integration task.

Access can also depend on account state, terms or redemption status. A service might consume or mark a ticket used while leaving a transferable souvenir record.

Ask what the application checks now and what happens if its servers or operator stop. The asset record can persist while the external utility changes.

Read one asset as a set of dependencies

For Signal #17, record its address, standard, owner, collection relationship, authorities, metadata URI, media references and licence. Then verify support in the wallet or application you intend to use.

Test the actual action: display, transfer, listing or application access. A marketplace listing screen does not establish support for every plugin or every lifecycle state.

Keep historical provenance distinct from the current control configuration. A recognizable creator and collection can help authenticate origin, but present permissions still need inspection.

Continue with Metaplex Core for a concrete account model, or game assets for application and licence mechanics.

Common questions

Is the image the NFT?

The image is media referenced or associated with an onchain asset. The record, metadata and media have different identities and dependencies.

Does buying an NFT give me copyright?

Read the applicable licence or assignment. Ownership of the asset record does not by itself establish every intellectual-property right.

Can the asset survive while the game stops working?

The onchain record can remain while an external application or service becomes unavailable.
