TVL values a provider-defined set of deposited assets at chosen prices. Receipt tokens can represent assets already counted elsewhere, so adding protocol totals can count the same underlying capital repeatedly. Read inclusion rules, category toggles, prices and timestamps before interpreting the total or its change.
TVL starts with an inclusion and valuation method
Total value locked describes asset value under a defined scope. A protocol, chain and analytics provider can use different inclusion rules, categories and treatment of borrowed or receipt assets.
The basic calculation multiplies included quantities by suitable prices and sums the values. It depends on which balances qualify, the price units and the observation time.
DefiLlama publishes its own rules for protocol and chain TVL, including separate categories and double-counting treatment. Those rules define that provider's metric; they are not a universal definition silently shared by every chart.
Keep native staking, liquid staking, lending, bridges and tokenized real-world assets under the actual category rules. A larger all-categories sum is not automatically the same metric as the default chain total.
A higher dollar value need not mean new deposits
Choose a teaching pool holding 100 SOL and 1,000 USDC, valuing USDC at one USD. At 100 USD per SOL, the marked value is 11,000 USD.
If SOL rises to 120 with quantities unchanged, the value becomes 13,000 USD. The 2,000 increase comes from the chosen price change, not 2,000 of new deposits.
If the pool instead receives new assets, that is a quantity change. A real period can contain deposits, withdrawals, rewards, losses and price changes at once.
Use an appropriately defined flow metric or an asset-level reconciliation when the question is capital entering the protocol. A dollar TVL line mixes valuation and quantity unless the method separates them.
A receipt can represent the same underlying capital
Choose a simplified system: Alice deposits assets valued at 100 USD into pool A and receives receipt R representing that claim. She then deposits R, still valued at 100, into vault B.
Pool A can report 100 under its protocol scope, while vault B can report a 100-valued deposited position under its own scope. Adding both gives 200 of gross layered exposure, even though this example began with 100 of underlying capital.
The second program introduces another dependency and risk, so its position is meaningful. It is not an independent second 100 of external capital for an aggregation intended to avoid that duplication.
The analytics method must choose what it measures: protocol-level exposure, gross claims or deduplicated underlying value. Label that choice rather than calling every sum unique TVL.
Prices can raise TVL without a deposit
Follow backing and claims across position layers
An LST represents a pool relationship to backing stake. A lending receipt represents a claim under its reserve accounting. A vault share can represent allocations to other positions.
Trace the asset graph from the displayed receipt to its underlying holdings. Keep exchange rates and quantities in compatible units and at coherent observation times.
Wrapped SOL provides a simpler duplicate representation problem: its token amount and native backing are related. Counting both as separate independent holdings can overstate the portfolio.
Borrowing and redepositing can create additional gross positions. The lender's supplied accounting, available assets and borrowed amount need distinct definitions; do not add debt-created claims indiscriminately to unique deposited capital.
Read the provider’s categories and exclusions
DefiLlama's current definitions distinguish borrowed amounts, protocol-token staking and other optional categories. Its default chain treatment excludes native staking and does not automatically include every liquid-staking total.
The provider also describes double-counted receipt or LP positions and category toggles. Save those settings when comparing charts or exporting totals.
Tokenized onchain claims and offchain issuer reserve assets need separate treatment. A stablecoin's backing bank reserves should not be blindly added to the onchain token value in a DeFi aggregate.
Methods can change. A series revision after a category or adapter update can move the reported total without a same-day onchain withdrawal.
Use TVL for the question it can answer
A TVL number does not establish immediately withdrawable liquidity, solvency, security or revenue. A lending reserve can have substantial claims with little idle withdrawal liquidity.
Record source, cluster, date, included categories, duplicate treatment, prices and unresolved coverage. Compare the same method across periods.
For a particular position, inspect underlying assets, debt, control and exit path. The withdrawal guide explains why a book value does not ensure immediate redemption at that value.
When a total changes, separate quantity movement, price movement and methodology changes before explaining the cause.
Common questions
Does rising TVL prove new money arrived?
No. Prices, rewards, losses and methodology can change the value alongside deposits or withdrawals.
Can two protocols report the same backing capital?
Their own position totals can include related claims. A chain or global aggregation needs a stated double-counting method.
Does TVL measure available exit liquidity?
No. Book value and immediately usable withdrawal or market liquidity are different quantities.
