In fact, some participants hadn’t even opened a crypto wallet before. This demonstrates how Homebase’s vision goes beyond innovation—it’s rooted in financial accessibility and inclusivity.

“Real estate is critical to financial freedom,” says Homebase co-founder and CEO Domingo Valadez. “The gap between the median income and median home price is the highest it’s ever been. We’re asking ourselves, how can we make real estate investing more attainable for people?”

Following the success of their initial tokenized property, Homebase replicated their model just three months later with another single-family home in McAllen, Texas, valued at $176,100. This second property also attracted 38 investors, with an average investment of just $4,638 per person, further validating the demand for accessible and fractionalized ownership.

Homebase’s journey to tokenizing real estate wasn’t without its challenges. For seven months, the team focused solely on legal and compliance frameworks, making sure their solution was not only innovative but legally sound.

Partnering with top law firm Hunton Andrews Kurth, Homebase developed a groundbreaking “token wrapper” using the Metaplex protocol. This wrapped structure provided crucial oversight functionalities, such as the ability to freeze, burn, or reissue tokens as needed, while also enforcing KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements. Additional features, such as escrow for crowdsourced funds and a one-year lockup period for tokens, ensured compliance with Regulation D.

By prioritizing thorough regulatory compliance over speed, Homebase set itself apart in a blockchain space often riddled with legal uncertainties. This cautious, measured approach built a solid foundation, allowing the company’s product to not only attract investors but also demonstrate how blockchain can be professionally applied to the heavily regulated real estate industry.

“Initially, we thought crypto-native users would be our main audience,” says Valadez, “but we quickly realized this is an everyone problem, not just a crypto problem.” During their March 2023 sale, for example, 15 of the 38 buyers created their first-ever Solana wallet specifically to participate in the Homebase transaction.

“We distribute all rental income in USDC,” explains Valadez, highlighting their partnership with Circle, the stablecoin issuer. To further simplify the process, Homebase integrated with CoinFlow, enabling investors to seamlessly move between fiat and crypto entirely within the platform. Investors can withdraw their monthly rental income directly into their bank accounts without technical complications, making the experience as user-friendly as logging into a traditional bank portal.

The Solana blockchain also offers a distinct advantage during ownership transfers. Unlike traditional real estate LLCs, where selling partial ownership often requires approval from other members, Homebase uses NFTs to represent shares in the property. These NFTs can be bought or sold on the platform without complex permission processes. Sellers are matched with buyers within the Homebase ecosystem, and the documentation is completed digitally via DocuSign, further reducing friction for participants.
